You may have seen in the news Tuesday that a ransomware attack has been launched globally by criminal hackers. This one is called Petya and is spread from computer to computer within a network after an initial infection, similar to the WannaCry malware attack that occurred earlier in May. However, this variant renders your computer unable to boot.
If you are not careful and accidentally open one of these phishing email attachments, you might infect not only your own workstation, but many other computers on your network.
Our Dean Dorton Technology consultants advise you to be very careful when you receive an email with an attachment that you were not expecting. If there is a .zip file in the attachment, do not click on it — simply delete the email. Always be skeptical about email attachments, especially if you were not expecting them.
If you ever open an attachment or click on a link and become concerned, please contact your IT support as soon as possible.
The best defense against malware and other cyber threats is a solid combination of software defense tools and user training. Please contact our Dean Dorton Technology consultants if you have questions or would like help with an assessment of your cyber defenses.
