Organizations which prescribe, dispense, or otherwise maintain investments in opioid or opioid containing products should maintain a strong internal control and monitoring strategy to mitigate risk. A well-designed monitoring program should include review of prescribing patterns, refill request patterns, inventory controls, and segregation of duties.
