Did you receive a Paycheck Protection Program loan?
As the article—which can be accessed below—explains, there is uncertainty about whether expenses deemed to have been paid with proceeds of Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans that later are forgiven will be deductible. The IRS says they are not, citing tax law which doesn’t allow deductions for expenses related to tax-exempt income. Some members of Congress state their belief that this is contrary to Congress’ intent. Our tax team members and our business clients who will have forgiven PPP loans will be very interested to see the outcome of this issue. If Congress acts to specifically allow these expenses to be deducted, that should resolve the matter. If Congress does not act, it will be interesting to see if some businesses will claim the deductions, then pursue favorable resolution in court when the IRS disallows the deductions. Such a legal challenge likely would take years before the issue is resolved.

IGNITE Leadership Conference
Earlier this summer, Dean Dorton hosted the IGNITE Leadership Conference, a two-day interactive program for college accounting students looking to become tomorrow’s leaders. Fifteen students from seven universities in the region gathered in Lexington on July 18-19 to gain hands-on experience through case study simulations, learn CPA exam tips, become acquainted with Dean Dorton’s services and industry expertise, and meet members of our team, ranging from interns to partners. Ryan Daff joined our Office Services team in Lexington. He is working toward his bachelor’s degree in accounting at Bluegrass Community and Technical College.
Tim Farah, a CPA, joined our Tax team in Louisville. He has more than14 years of tax experience, including with local, regional, and international firms. Tim earned his bachelor’s degree in political science, as well as master’s degree in accountancy and business administration from the University of Louisville.
Jordan Johnson joined our Cybersecurity team in Lexington. He has more than two years of technology support experience. Jordan earned his bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity from the University of Cumberlands.
Deidre Kinser joined our Accounting and Financial Outsourcing team in Lexington. She has more than six years of accounting experience. Deidre earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting from Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tennessee.
Shara Lucio, a CPA, joined our Tax team in Louisville. She has more than four years of tax experience. Shara earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Louisville, where she was recognized as an Outstanding Accounting Graduate.
Ian Tompkins joined our Tax team in Louisville. He has four years of accounting and tax experience. Prior to joining the accounting industry, he was a professional baseball player in the Kansas City Royals organization. Ian earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Louisville.
Kylie Waters, a CPA, joined our Healthcare Consulting team in Lexington. She has more than 18 years of accounting and healthcare finance/compliance experience, most recently serving as a CFO for a multi-site health and housing organization. Kylie earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Kentucky and her MBA from Morehead State University.
