Medical Coder (Louisville, KY)


Dean Dorton, one of Kentucky’s largest regional consulting services firms, has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Medical Coder.

In this role, you will assign diagnostic and procedural codes to records of discharged patients, sequencing diagnoses to optimize reimbursement, and case mix in accordance with coding guidelines. This includes supporting Dean Dorton’s hospital clients by coding inpatient and outpatient records using ICD-10-CM classification system with MS-DRG expertise. Through the assignment of appropriate codes, you will play a key role in the operations of our clients. The position will work in collaboration with Dean Dorton’s healthcare consulting team to support the overall success of our clients.

Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Assign codes for diagnoses, treatments, and procedures according to the appropriate classification system for inpatient and observation encounters
  • Review provider documentation to determine principal diagnosis, co-morbidities and complications, secondary conditions, and surgical procedures
  • Utilize technical coding principals and MS-DRG reimbursement expertise to assign appropriate ICD-10-CM diagnoses and procedures
  • Ensure accurate coding by clarifying diagnosis and procedural information through a query process
  • Extract required information from hospital client electronic medical record and enter into encoder and abstracting system
  • Prioritize work to ensure timeframe of medical record coding meets client requirements
  • Serve as a resource for coding-related questions to clients as appropriate
  • Meet Dean Dorton and client performance and quality standards
